About Rehabs Covered by Aetna

If you are looking for substance abuse treatment for yourself or a loved one, cost is a valid concern. Fortunately, federal regulations now require health care providers and insurers to cover addiction treatment services. Whether you need alcohol rehab or a drug treatment program, providers like Aetna offer plans that support those affected by addiction. Specific coverage varies based on your exact plan — contact our admissions team or your provider to confirm your benefits.

Aetna Insurance covers treatment for alcohol addiction and drug abuse but may require an initial deductible before coverage begins.

What Types of Treatments Are Available?

Treatment options vary depending on the severity of addiction and the needs of the individual. A clinical assessment typically determines the best course of action. Examples of treatment types include:

How Utilizing Insurance Benefits Works

Coverage varies by plan, so you should always verify your benefits with a treatment provider. Renaissance Recovery is in-network with Aetna and offers a variety of addiction treatment services to those with an Aetna plan. Aetna-Covered Detox

Detoxification is an early part of addiction treatment and helps clients overcome withdrawal symptoms. During and after detox, some treatment centers use medication-assisted treatment to help manage dangerous alcohol and opioid withdrawal symptoms.

What Is the Affordable Care Act (ACA)?

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), passed in 2010, helps individuals pay for drug and alcohol rehab. Under the ACA, addiction treatment can no longer be denied as a pre-existing condition.

Insurance plans sold on the Health Insurance Marketplace offer various levels of addiction treatment coverage similar to private plans. The ACA also expands treatment options for people covered under Medicare and Medicaid, although requirements and benefits differ by state.

How Much ACA Insurance Covers

Under the ACA, coverage for addiction treatment must be equal to coverage for other medical conditions. Treatments may include:

  • Addiction evaluation
  • Brief intervention
  • Addiction treatment medication
  • Clinic visits
  • Alcohol and drug testing
  • Home health visits
  • Family counseling
  • Anti-craving medication

ACA health insurance plans also cover inpatient services, including medical detox. Some states operate their own Marketplace platforms separate from Healthcare.gov, resulting in differences based on Medicare and Medicaid coverage.

Inpatient or Residential Treatment with Aetna

Aetna covers inpatient stays at addiction treatment centers. Inpatient care involves living at the facility with 24/7 monitoring. Programs may last 30, 60, or 90 days, although some plans only cover certain lengths of stay. Contact us to learn how your Aetna plan applies to Renaissance’s treatment options.

Does Aetna Cover Intensive Outpatient Treatment?

After inpatient care — or sometimes in place of it — many people transition to an intensive outpatient program (IOP). In outpatient care, clients continue therapy, medication-assisted treatment, and dual diagnosis support while gradually reintegrating into daily life. Session frequency typically includes several visits per week for a few hours at a time.

Aetna Mental Health Coverage

Many clients dealing with addiction also have underlying mental health disorders like anxiety or depression — known as dual diagnosis. Quality rehab centers, including Renaissance Recovery, provide treatment for co-occurring conditions. Aetna includes behavioral and mental health coverage in its plans. See details at Aetna Behavioral Health.
